Other Information

Please note: From 1 April 2026, HETAS training is evolving.

HETAS is introducing a new core and module pathway, designed to clearly distinguish the essential knowledge shared across all courses from the specialist modules required for specific roles.

As part of this transition, the course names you may already be familiar with will be gradually phased out. You will also need to review which training is relevant to you and how it aligns with your existing qualifications.

How the New Structure Works:

Core Knowledge provides the essential foundation for all installers, servicing technicians, and chimney sweeps. It covers the fundamental principles required across the industry, including safety, solid fuel basics, standards, and key regulations.

Once Core Knowledge is completed, learners can progress by selecting the modules relevant to their specific role. The available modules include:

  • Chimneys and Flues – covers chimney systems, how they operate, installation requirements, and safety considerations.
  • Sweeping – provides training in chimney sweeping, cleaning processes, and associated safety checks.
  • Servicing – focuses on the maintenance and servicing of appliances to ensure safe and efficient operation.
  • Biomass Appliance Installer – an advanced module covering biomass systems, larger installations, and associated safety standards.
  • Dry Appliance Installer – for those installing appliances without a water system, such as log burners.
  • Wet Appliance Installer – for those installing appliances connected to heating or hot water systems.
  • Small Craft – specialist training for installing appliances on boats or other small craft.
  • Pellet Appliance Installer – focuses on pellet appliances, including installation and specific operating requirements.
  • Combined Sweep and Servicing – a complete pathway for professionals delivering both sweeping and servicing competencies.

At a Glance:

For those familiar with the previous course codes, the transition to the new structure is as follows:

  • H001 / H002 → Core Knowledge
  • H003 → Core Knowledge + Chimneys and Flues + Dry Appliance Installer
  • H004 → Core Knowledge + Chimneys and Flues + Dry Appliance Installer + Wet Appliance Installer
  • H005 → Core Knowledge + Chimneys and Flues + Biomass Appliance Installer
  • H006 → Now incorporated into Chimneys and Flues
  • H008 → Core Knowledge + Chimneys and Flues + Dry Appliance Installer + Pellet Appliance Installer
  • H009 → Core Knowledge + Servicing
  • H009S → Core Knowledge + Sweeping
  • H010 → Core Knowledge + Chimneys and Flues + Dry Appliance Installer + Small Craft
  • H011 → Combined Sweep and Servicing

Why HETAS Are Making These Changes

The new structure has been developed in collaboration with HETAS Approved Training Centres to enhance the learning experience for both centres and candidates. Key benefits include:

  • Reduced duplication – shared content is delivered once through Core Knowledge, rather than repeated across multiple courses.
  • Improved clarity – it is easier to understand which modules are required for each role.
  • Greater flexibility – training centres can deliver modules in a way that better suits their schedules and learners.
  • Alignment with Mandatory Technical Competencies – the structure reflects the competencies required for each registration category.
